Yam and Swiss Chard or Kale Gratin

Yam & Swiss Chard Gratin Cover 11-12It was a KalePalooza at our January Food Bloggers of Los Angeles event.  I decided to repurpose my Yam & Swiss Chard Gratin I made for Thanksgiving and put a Kale twist to it.  It is delicious either way.  Sweet yams, cheese and a bechamel sauce make this dish irresistable.  You can make this as a holiday side dish, a vegetarian dish or a winter main dish.   I served this dish at Thanksgiving and even yam-haters enjoyed it.  Now that it is January and healthy food is on everyone’s mind, eat more yams – heck, it is a Superfood. Easy 15 Minute Pie Crust Recipe is Foolproof

Hannah’s Old-Fashioned Apple Pie – Made with Love!

Pies took on a starring role in our November Cooking Class, but that’s not the only place these sweet gems of Americana star in our culture.  I felt like an armchair traveler reading the book, American Pie.  Pascale Le Draoulec travels across the country from San Francisco to New York tasting pies and learning about America’s regional culture along the way.  I wanted to jump into the book and experience this dream trip right alongside her.   Pies again took the starring role in the movie, Waitress, when actress Keri Russell stars as Jenna, a waitress whose fabulous pies are about the only sweet ingredient in an otherwise dreary existence.  The luscious footage of her pies directed me right to the refrigerator for a sample right off the screen. Yam & Carrot Latkes topped with Peanut Sauce

Yam and Carrot Latkes topped with Peanut Sauce

Yam and Carrot Latkes topped with Peanut Sauce

Since it’s Hanukkah, I’ve been seeing a lot of latkes on the blogs and in the news.  I was going to a holiday party at a friend’s house, so I decided I would use the yams, carrots, red onion and cilantro I had in my refrigerator to make some latkes for the party. (more…)

One-Dish Meals Cooking Class A Success!

We sliced and we diced. We stirred and we stir-fried. We skewered and we sizzled.   And then we ate and ate and drank some nice wine.    All the teams cooked such beautiful and delicious dishes at our Quick One-Dish Meals Cooking Class.  OK, they weren’t so quick, but with a smaller home audience and a second try at it, these meals will come together in 30 minutes or less.  (more…)
